The electric vehicle market in China is heating up! Xiaomi is directly challenging Tesla with a bold move: offering enticing financing options for its YU7 electric SUV, mirroring Tesla's recent strategy. This financing war could reshape the landscape of EV ownership in China.
Xiaomi's founder, chairman, and CEO, Lei Jun, made the announcement during a live stream, confirming that all YU7 models are eligible for this offer. If you order a YU7 between January 16 and February 28, you can get started with as little as RMB 49,900 (approximately $7,160).
But here's where it gets interesting: the monthly payments start at ¥2,593 (C$516/US$372) over a 7-year period, making the YU7 one of the most aggressively financed electric SUVs currently available in China. Xiaomi also provides a 3-year plan with 0% interest, which increases monthly payments to ¥4,961 (C$989/US$712).
The YU7 itself is priced starting at ¥253,500, undercutting the base price of Tesla’s Model Y, which begins at ¥263,500. This pricing strategy, coupled with attractive financing, is a clear shot across Tesla's bow.
Xiaomi officially launched the YU7 in mid-2025, marking its debut in the electric SUV market. On its launch day, the SUV secured 20,000 orders, and demand has remained strong. In 2025, deliveries totaled 153,673 vehicles, and the order backlog exceeded a year.
And this is the part most people miss: Xiaomi's move is a direct response to Tesla's recent financing offers in China. Tesla announced low-interest financing for up to seven years on Model 3, Model Y, and the six-seat Model Y L. This offer is available to customers who place orders by January 31, making Tesla the first automaker in China to introduce such extended financing terms.
