Imagine a winter where thousands of elderly individuals could avoid a severe respiratory illness simply by getting a vaccine. Yet, shockingly, nearly 30% of those over 80 and almost 50% of those over 75 in Somerset haven’t received this potentially life-saving protection. NHS Somerset has launched a campaign to change this, targeting a virus that disproportionately affects older adults: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
Here’s the eye-opening part: Every year in the UK, around 9,000 people over 75 are hospitalized due to RSV, according to NHS data. This virus, which spreads as easily as a cough or sneeze, can be particularly harsh on older lungs, leading to complications like pneumonia. But here’s where it gets controversial: While RSV has long been a concern for infants, its impact on the elderly has only recently gained attention, leaving many unaware of the risks—and the solution.
The RSV vaccine being rolled out is a game-changer. Mike Kelly, Somerset’s lead for neighborhoods and vaccinations, emphasizes, “This vaccine can be the difference between a healthy winter and a hospital stay for many.” It’s not just for the elderly, though—pregnant women from 28 weeks onward are also eligible, as it protects newborns during their vulnerable first months. And this is the part most people miss: The vaccine is free and available now, yet many eligible individuals haven’t taken advantage of it.
So, who’s eligible? If you’re aged 75-79, turned 80 after September 1, 2024, or are a pregnant woman past 28 weeks, your GP should be reaching out to book your appointment. But here’s the question: With such a simple solution available, why are so many still at risk? Is it lack of awareness, hesitancy, or something else entirely?
