Lysander Mihaly, a rising star in the swimming world, has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business for the fall of 2027. This decision marks a significant step in his academic and athletic journey, as he aims to excel both in the classroom and in the pool. With his impressive swimming credentials and a strong academic profile, Mihaly is poised to make a significant impact at Penn.
A Swimming Sensation
As a senior at Riverside High School in Durham, North Carolina, Mihaly has already made his mark in high school swimming. He qualified for the 2026 NCHSAA 7A State Championship, finishing as the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle (4:25.79) and claiming third place in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.13). These achievements were accompanied by personal best times in both events, showcasing his dedication and talent.
At the 2026 Cary Sectionals, Mihaly's prowess continued to shine. He secured runner-up positions in the 500-yard freestyle (4:25.17), 1000-yard freestyle (9:07.59), and 1650-yard freestyle (15:13.39), all while setting personal best times. His versatility was further evident in his third-place finishes in the 400-yard individual medley (3:53.66) and 200-yard freestyle (1:37.81), as well as his fifth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.21).
The North Carolina Aquatic Club member's success continued at the NCAC Spring Tar Heel States meet, where he dominated with a series of lifetime best times. He claimed first place in the 50-yard freestyle (21.30), 100-yard freestyle (45.64), 1000-yard freestyle (9:01.30), and 100-yard backstroke (52.85). His second-place finishes in the 50-yard butterfly (23.52) and 400-yard individual medley (3:52.85) further solidified his status as a top swimmer.
Ivy League Excellence
Penn, a Division I Mid-Major program in the Ivy League, finished 8th at the conference championships in the previous season. Despite this, the team's potential was evident, as Mihaly's performances would have placed him in the top 10 in the 1000-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle, and in the 'B' and 'C' finals in various events. With a full season ahead of him before his arrival, Mihaly is expected to be a valuable asset to the Quakers.
