A beloved ice-fishing tradition is at risk of disappearing, and it's sparking a heated debate in Rothesay, New Brunswick.
For decades, a vibrant winter village has flourished on the Kennebasis River, with colorful, customized shacks dotting the ice. These shacks have become a cultural icon, attracting locals and tourists alike. But here's where it gets controversial: the town has decided to put an end to these traditional shacks, citing concerns over abandoned debris and a lack of cleanliness.
Mike Donovan, a long-time ice-fishing enthusiast, shares his disappointment. He explains how the shacks have always been a social hub, bringing people together from all walks of life. "It's a unique experience," Donovan says, "and it's a shame to see it go."
But the town's decision is not without reason. Years of dealing with dilapidated shacks and junk left behind at the end of the season have taken a toll. Deputy Mayor Matt Alexander emphasizes the town's efforts to work with ice fishers to maintain a clean environment, but to no avail.
"We've tried to collaborate," Alexander says, "but the problem persists. It's unfortunate, but we had to take action."
And this is the part most people miss: the town is open to a compromise. They're willing to allow shacks back on the ice if the fishing community steps up and takes responsibility for the area's upkeep. "We need a united front," Alexander explains. "An association that can ensure the ice is pristine and that materials are removed at the end of the season."
