In the heart of Hanoi's bustling urban landscape, where narrow alleyways weave a complex social fabric, ODDO Architects has crafted a remarkable extension to TH+ House. This project is a testament to the studio's innovative approach, transforming a seemingly restrictive environment into a vibrant, flexible living space. The extension, a 2.5-metre-wide plot adjacent to the original TH House, presents a unique challenge: how to expand a home within the constraints of Hanoi's intimate alleyways.
ODDO Architects embraces these constraints as opportunities, creating a stacked series of flexible spaces that mirror the social intensity of the surrounding alleyways. The design revolves around a central, bright red steel support, acting as both the structural backbone and a spatial organiser. This bold choice of material not only supports the building but also symbolises the project's core idea of openness, adaptability, and spatial generosity within the confines of the urban environment.
On the ground floor, the extension seamlessly integrates a new kitchen, bathroom, and courtyard with the existing dining area. A wall of folding glass doors opens onto the adjacent alley, blurring the boundaries between the interior and the exterior. This design encourages a sense of community, allowing residents to engage with the vibrant life of the alleyways while enjoying the comforts of home.
Above, the living room, tea room, and new bedrooms are connected through internal windows and a bean-shaped opening. This design element creates a visual link between the new spaces and the existing home, fostering a sense of continuity and unity. The upper levels are lined with timber panels, introducing a warmer character that contrasts with the darker stone floors and exposed concrete ceilings of the lower spaces.
The central red steel column is a masterpiece of structural and spatial design. By concentrating the load into a single element, it frees the plan from structural constraints, allowing for larger openings, flexible layouts, and continuous visual connections across the narrow footprint. This innovative approach not only ensures the building's structural integrity but also enhances the overall aesthetic, making the column a prominent feature of the house.

The perforated white-steel walkways provide a delicate balance of natural light and privacy, connecting each level of the house.
