A shocking murder investigation has been launched following the tragic stabbing of a university student near the De Montfort University campus in Leicester. An 18-year-old has been detained on suspicion of committing murder in connection with this incident.
The university's vice-chancellor, Professor Katie Normington, confirmed that the victim, a young man in his twenties, was indeed a student at the institution. In her heartfelt statement, she expressed the university’s devastation over the loss, saying, "We are deeply saddened to inform you about the tragic death of one of our students. Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by this event. We are committed to providing support to our students, staff, and the victim's family. We are collaborating closely with Leicestershire Police as they investigate this serious matter. Authorities were alerted shortly after 5 PM on Tuesday when reports surfaced of a man collapsing on Oxford Street, specifically near the intersection with Bonners Lane in Leicester’s city center. While officers made their way to the scene, it became evident that the man had suffered a stabbing, leading to his urgent transportation to Leicester Royal Infirmary. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, according to a spokesperson from Leicestershire Police.
In response to the investigation, an 18-year-old male suspect has been arrested and remains in police custody. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the victim may have been involved in a confrontation with another individual on the street, who fled the area before the police's arrival.
Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, the senior investigator on the case, stated, "We are currently piecing together what transpired at the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane, where two men reportedly engaged in a confrontation. One of them is believed to have been stabbed and subsequently collapsed in the street. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, he did not survive. We are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and interviewing potential witnesses to aid our investigation. We know that many individuals came to the victim's assistance before emergency services arrived, and we want to extend our gratitude to them. If you were among those who helped and have not yet spoken to police, please reach out to us.
The incident occurred during a busy time on Oxford Street, so we urge anyone who may have seen anything or has dashcam footage from that area to contact us. Local officers will be conducting reassurance patrols in the area in the coming days, and we encourage anyone with concerns to approach them. The university released a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, clarifying, "We are aware of an extremely serious incident on our campus and are cooperating with Leicestershire Police as they initiate an immediate inquiry. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected, and we are providing direct support to students and staff who witnessed the occurrence."
Cabinet minister and Leicester West MP Liz Kendall expressed her sympathy for those impacted by this grave incident, stating, "I am aware of the serious situation that unfolded at De Montfort University yesterday evening. The university is offering support to students and staff affected by this tragic event. My thoughts are with all those involved."
Additionally, the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust cautioned patients with appointments scheduled for Wednesday about potential disruptions near Leicester Royal Infirmary due to the ongoing incident. They advised, "Due to the current road closures around the hospital stemming from the overnight incident, expect traffic delays in the area this morning. Please ensure you arrive for your appointment and allow extra travel time. Follow local detours and police guidance. If you experience delays, please contact your clinic or department where feasible."
