Halfbrick, the Australian mobile game developer behind the popular titles Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, has made some tough decisions during a challenging period for the gaming industry. In a statement, the company acknowledged that they had to let go of 41 employees and end several international contracts. This move, they emphasized, was not a reflection of individual performance, but rather a strategic adjustment to align with their organizational priorities.
The statement, posted on LinkedIn, expressed gratitude for the contributions of those affected, highlighting their impact on shaping the studio's games and supporting its players. Despite the difficult circumstances, Halfbrick assured that the transition would be handled with care and respect for the individuals who have dedicated their efforts to the company.
This recent development adds to a history of staffing changes for Halfbrick. In 2018, the company made headlines when it laid off more than half of its staff, leaving fewer than 30 employees. At the time, it was reported that the remaining staff focused solely on live operations for Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride.
Despite these challenges, Halfbrick continues to innovate, with its latest title, Bluey's Quest for the Gold Pen, launching on iOS in December 2025 and Android in January 2026. Console and PC versions are expected to release on May 28, 2026.
This situation raises questions about the gaming industry's current state and the strategies companies must adopt to navigate its challenges. What do you think? Do you think this is a necessary step for Halfbrick's long-term success, or do you have a different perspective? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
