Former Cycling Ireland Official Given Suspended Sentence for Attempted Deception (2026)

A former Cycling Ireland official, Garry Nugent, was given a suspended sentence for attempting to deceive the Department of Transport. Nugent, a 51-year-old from Coalisland, Co. Tyrone, pleaded guilty to two charges of attempting to deceive the department between March and June 2020. He produced fake quotations to secure a sports grant, intending to combine them for tandem bicycles for the Paralympic Games. Cycling Ireland faced a time-sensitive application process, and the pandemic added pressure. Despite the lack of financial gain, the court considered the exceptional circumstances and Nugent's admission of guilt, apologizing and not benefiting financially. Judge Orla Crowe imposed a 18-month suspended sentence, emphasizing the need for good behavior for three years.
