Households brace for lower energy bills as price cap shake-up looms
Households across the nation are set to see a significant reduction in their energy bills, with an average cut of £150 promised by the government. This shake-up comes as a welcome relief for many families struggling with rising costs. The latest forecasts indicate that the energy price cap will be lowered by £117, resulting in a new annual cap of £1,641 for dual-fuel households from April 1st. This announcement is part of a broader strategy to address the Energy Company Obligation (Eco) scheme, which was introduced by the previous Tory government.
However, it's important to note that the discount won't be a straightforward £150 across the board. The savings will vary depending on the size and type of household, as well as their energy consumption. The reduction is expected to be primarily applied through a lower price per unit of electricity, with suppliers providing detailed information to their customers after the price cap announcement.
According to Cornwall Insight, the changes will lead to a reduction of around £145 annually, taking into account VAT and pricing allowances within the cap methodology. However, they also noted that increases in charges associated with the operation and maintenance of Britain's energy networks have partially offset these savings.
Wholesale prices have also seen slight increases since the last forecast in December, with gas costs particularly volatile due to geopolitical factors. Despite this, wholesale costs remain lower than when Ofgem set the January cap level, and the cap is expected to remain relatively steady throughout 2026, with only a small rise forecast in July.
Industry experts weigh in
Ned Hammond, deputy director of customer policy at Energy UK, a representative body for energy firms, highlights an important point: the £150 saving is applied to the unit rate, which means households will experience varying savings based on their energy consumption. Some may see much higher savings, while others might see substantially lower savings than the average £150.
Additionally, other factors like network charges and wholesale costs can influence energy bills, meaning they may not always align with the provided savings. The price cap itself is projected to drop by approximately £115 from April 1st.
Emily Seymour, energy editor at Which?, offers reassurance: 'Households can expect a significant cut to their energy bills in April, which will come as a relief to millions of people struggling with the cost of living. The majority of this change will be reflected in the electricity price per unit, so individual savings will depend on usage. Households should keep an eye on communications from their energy providers in the coming weeks to understand the impact on their bills.'
Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, advises households to focus on the changes in unit costs and standing charges rather than solely on the average energy bill. He acknowledges the complexity of energy bills and the challenges people face when deciding to switch tariffs or change suppliers, emphasizing the need for clear information and support.
