In the wake of the Aquarena's closure in 2023, swimmers in St. John's have been seeking alternatives to keep their routines alive. However, on Wednesday, members of various swim clubs finally got to plunge into the pool at this newly revamped facility.

“It feels fantastic to be back in this spacious environment. We’ve really missed it, and returning means so much to us all,” expressed Nathan Wilson, a member of the St. John's Legends club.

Originally built for the Canada Games in 1977, the Aquarena underwent significant renovations leading up to the 2025 Canada Games being held in St. John's. After initially reopening for the games, the facility closed again to complete the remaining updates.

Now, after an extensive renovation period that cost $25 million, the Aquarena is ready to open its doors once more.

On Wednesday, swim teams had the privilege of being the first to dive into the water as a way to celebrate the Aquarena’s return to public service. While the public opening is just around the corner, not all amenities within the facility are ready for immediate use. Laura Howells from CBC reports on this exciting development.

Craig Neil, general manager of The Works, shared with CBC News that while swim clubs are currently back in the water, public activities such as lane swimming and lessons will kick off next week.

"It's an incredible feeling! We are thrilled; this is precisely what we had hoped for. This morning, seeing all the athletes in the pool was truly uplifting," Neil remarked.

Among the numerous improvements made to the facility is a new one-meter diving platform, an upgraded timing system, and family-friendly changing rooms designed to ensure accessibility for everyone.

"Displaced athletes can hardly wait for the renovations at Aquarena to conclude by spring," reported earlier.

The Aquarena will also feature a brand-new waterslide, although it will be smaller than the previous version, as Neil pointed out. Certain amenities, including saunas and hot tubs, are still a few months away from being accessible. Additionally, the Tim Horton's café located within The Works will be reopening soon.

"The Aquarena and fitness center have been integral to our community for years, and I believe many locals are devoted to it. I am confident we will see our patrons return," Neil stated.
